Our Weekend with Harlem

Our Weekend with Harlem: "

Harlem rocks monster island basementOriginally posted on April 26, 2010

It was a weekend of Harlem for Daily Vinyl. We caught them Thursday night at the Mercury lounge and then again Friday at Monster Island. The two shows were worlds apart.

The Mercury Lounge show was an early set that started at 8. It was packed, but the crowd was static. The sound was good but Michael Coomer, one of the band's two frontmen who sings lead on 'Gay Human Bones', was being a total dick head, but not really in a charming way. It left us with a bad taste in our mouth.

Monster Island was a totally different vibe. It's a DIY basement venue in Brooklyn that's the ideal setting for Harlem's sound. Again it was packed, but this time with a totally different crowd ready to rock and roll. Some dude had to stand and hold onto the stage-left speaker tower so that it didn't collapse into the mosh pit. The floor, and the speakers, were shaking the entire set. There was nothing sloppy about the band this night either, and it made it seem like they were just screwing around and being confrontational at the Mercury Lounge.

Harlem is one of our favorite new bands, and if they are coming to your town, you gotta check them out. Now here are some crappy iphone photos of the Monster Island show.
