Kurt Vile is a lo-fi indie rocker that hails from Philadelphia, PA. His music, although considered lo-fi, is pretty reminiscent of classic rock legends like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and Tom Petty. Vile grew up outside Philly in the nearby town of Lansdowne. He began learning music on a banjo given to him by his father. Vile eventually advanced from the banjo to guitar, and started writing and recording his own demos at home. Vile's early home recordings often featured drum machines and simple arrangements. The recordings eventually became his first releases, as he burned them to CD-R and handed them out at shows.
Around this time Vile began collaborating with his friend singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel and formed the War on Drugs in 2003. War on Drugs released an EP in 2005 and 2007, eventually put out their debut, Wagonwheel Blues (2008), on the awesome Secretly Canadian imprint. Around the same time of the War on Drugs release, Vile began work on his first solo record Constant Hitmaker. The record was comprised of many of the songs on his early CD-R's as well as newly recorded tracks. By the time Constant Hitmaker was reissued on the Woodist Label, Vile was on the map. He toured on the back of Constant Hitmaker, playing underground shows across the East Coast, and eventually support throughout the US and Europe.
In 2009 Vile released the mini-album God Is Saying This to You? (2009) on the label Mexican Summer and The Hunchback EP (2009) on Richie Records. Vile's first release on Matador, Childish Prodigy, came out in October of 2009.
