Here Comes The Vinyl Exploitative Movement

Here Comes The Vinyl Exploitative Movement: "

vinyl records in upper east side gallery

(Via NYPress)

As we noted the other day, vinyl records are being sold in record numbers, we're talking 2.5 million vinyls last year alone, which is the most records sold since Nielsen started tracking them 20 years ago. So once businesses see profit like this, it's inevitable that someone's right there waiting to rip you off. Enter the Gagosian Gallery in NYC. They have started selling special edition vinyl with cover art that is signed by the artists in their Upper East Side shop, this according to the New York Times.

So how much are they selling these for? Well, take The Talking Heads’ excellent record Speaking in Tongues, a record I myself picked up for $4 in mint condition, will run you $2,000 dollars. Of course this includes a signed record by David Byrne and cover artist Robert Rauschenberg, but 2,000 clams seems to be a bit steep.

Records that aren't even signed by the artists are still getting astronomical prices. The NY Press states that Copies of The Velvet Underground & Nico range from $80 to $200 dollars, and Sonic Youth’s Dirty costs $70!

This is only the beginning of the vinyl exploitation movement. Don't be one of the guy/gals who purchases these overly expensive vinyls, otherwise we will be very very disappointed in you! If you want to get a vinyl please visit your local record store or swing by our store to get these classic records at reasonable prices.
