Marc Weinstein Is A Cool Dude

Marc Weinstein Is A Cool Dude: "

marc weinstein from amoeba records

The LA Times had a great piece in their Sunday paper on Amoeba Records founder Marc Weinstein this weekend. We have professed our love for his lovely record chain in the past, and we found this article very enlightening, as it sheds some light on the man behind all those awesome records.

We found out that Marc Weinstein started selling records at the awesome Buffalo staple, Record Theatre back when it was the largest record store in the country. He loved working in a record store so much that he would eventually open up Amoeba's first location 20 years ago in an old Mexican restaurant in Berkley. Since then he has opened two more locations, the now infamous San Fran store in the Haight-Ashbury district, and finally opening it's largest location in LA in 2001 on Sunset.

It's a really cool article that shows a man who was able to beat the rise and fall of all those record store chains like Sam Goody, Virgin Megastore, and Tower. He did it by staying true to the independent artists and making sure his stores stood out from the pack. He told the LA Times, "When most of the chain stores moved into video displays that marketed the latest hits, we've been adamant that independent artists have equal standing next to major-label artists," he said. "We don't put up major label displays on the wall. We don't sell shelf space. Never have. Our customers know that."

Well done to you Mr. Weinstein!
