Band Review: Mon Khmer

Band Review: Mon Khmer: "

Mon Khmer band photoMon Khmer is an up-and-coming rock band currently based in Brooklyn. But they're not really from Brooklyn. They may be based there now, but the band members hail from Germany, India, and various parts of the US. And their music doesn't deserve the baggage that the Brooklyn tag often carries with it. The name refers to an ancient family of languages in Northeast India where the band's vocalist and primary songwriter, Hammarsing Kharhmar, grew up.

Mon Khmer makes rock music with sonic textures that will probably lead many people to apply the currently trendy tag of psych to the band. Their use of synth and pedal steel certainly add an experimental element, and there's plenty of a reverby-vibe going on, but their mastery of their instruments and widely-varying influences mesh cohesively into a sound that is totally unique.

The defining element of the band's sound seems to be the collective intensity when the group plays together, regardless of whether the song is soft and slow, or loud and fast.

We're pleased to say that the group is releasing the vinyl version of their debut LP, Mon Khmer, on very own Daily Vinyl imprint. Pick up a copy now, or head out to see this band live. There is surely lots more good music to come out of Mon Khmer, so be sure to catch them in an intimate venue this year or check out their record before our limited copies run out.
