Portion of Distortion: High Places/Fucked Up/Liars Live at Barge Park

pink eyes from fucked up jumps in the crowd at northside festivalOriginally posted on July 1, 2010

I only attended two Northside shows over the weekend: The Daily Vinyl Showcase at Union Pool on Friday night (where the hell were YOU, man?) and the High Places/Fucked Up/Liars tornado at the MetroPCS Stage at Barge Park on Saturday night.

After living through the Agincourt of headaches from the Bacchanalia that was the DV Showcase and watching the last scene of the most recent Rambo flick to help cope with the pain endured during the USA’s monumental loss to Ghana (yeah, I actually thought we were going to win), three friends and I grabbed a car over to the space.

We found ourselves in a big parking lot parallel to Midtown Manhattan and the Empire State Building; such a nice view for a show. Because of beer goggles and my photographic forgetfulness (I once went on a 4-day trip to Las Vegas/Los Angeles and took 8 pictures of nothing particularly interesting) I’m only manned with a handful of shots of Pink Eyes’ (AKA Damian Abraham of Fucked Up) moobies, and one far-away pics of Liars rocking out, courtesy of my friend, Sasha. All aforementioned pics were taken on cell phones and are posted below.

Speed review:

High Places was a bunch of weirdo simian witch noise. The epitome of why the Hipster/Brooklyn music scene’s bar is so low.

Fucked Up was awesome. Such a good time to watch those dudes and dudette rock out on stage whilst the ever-charismatic Pink Eyes stripped to his skivvies and stalked the crowd looking for dry-humps and hugs. I’m kicking myself in the ass for skipping their late-2009 show with the Vivian Girls and Andrew W.K. on keyboards. I listened to “Hidden World” earlier today…might be one of the best punk records I’ve ever spun.

Liars were awesome, loud and full of energy. I’ve never been wowed by their music on wax, but you can consider me a fan from here on out.
