Portion of Distortion: Converge

Portion of Distortion: Converge: "

Converge Jane DoeOriginally posted on June 10, 2010

Welcome to “Portion of Distortion,” in which I talk about cool colored, rare and shaped vinyl I own to stroke my ego. Go!

One of my all-time favorite double LPs is this beautiful, clear pressing of Converge’s Jane Doe, the Massachusetts metalcore outfit’s magnum opus. From the first discordant note to the scorched-earth sandblast snare bursts of “Concubine,” Jane’s a bad bitch, and she’s got a body that just won’t quit.

Frontman (and hardcore icon) Jacob Bannon framed the album’s lyrical themes around “a dissolving relationship and the emotional fallout from that experience,” and it shows. The stop-and-go sludge-punk-from-hell riffage on “Homewrecker” and “The Broken Vow,” the groove-laden ambience of “Hell to Pay,” the chaos-and-breakdown of “Distance and Meaning” and “Thaw,” the soaring self-titled closing track and lyrical passages like, “I’ll take my love to the grave,” mix up to make a nice little emotional led salad. This is the ultimate breakup record.

Jane has been in heavy rotation on my turntable for damn near 10 years (released by Equal Vision in 2001). Arguably one of the best heavy records of the past decade, and easily one of my favorite Christmas presents of all time. Only 350 of these shits were pressed and the only other one I can find is currently going for $399.99 on eBay. But don’t fret, Deathwish, Inc. is re-releasing this, and when we get our hands on it we'll put it up in our store.

Until then let Converge grind your face with the samples below.
