Grimey's music in Nashville is in a class of its own. The store's soul lies in the enthusiasm and love for music of its proprietor Mike Grimes, or Grimey. You're just as likely to find Grimey thumbing through the back inventory for a customer as you are to find him pouring beers or working the soundboard in Grimey's downstairs venue, The Basement. Everyone on the local music scene knows Grimey and Nashville's smartest new bands know that The Basement's New Faces Night is the place to play your first public gig.
It's not really possible to consider Grimey's without including The Basement in your assessment of what the store has to offer. Grimey's, along with The Basement, is home turf for the Nashville independent music scene and has played host to some of the best indie shows The Music City has seen in recent memory. From an impromptu late night Beatles jam by members of Wilco to a secret show by Metallica, to seminal early shows by The Whigs and Dr. Dog, The Basement is the vanguard of the local Nashville scene. And beyond the shows you can catch at The Basement, the record store itself regularly hosts in-store performances by indie stalwarts like Andrew Bird, Feist and Nada Surf, and outdoor bbq's with acts like The Avett Brothers and Bobby Bare Jr. This little building on 8th Ave S. with the Grimey's sign is just oozing music at all hours of night and day.
Grimey's is a record store in the classic sense. It's a cornerstone of the local independent rock scene and it's the first place that many quality bands from around the country play on their first trip through Nashville. While this might not be the best spot in Nashville to find all the ear bleeding country classics you need, this is the store where Sonic Youth shops when they're in town.
