Academy Records Annex, sister to Manhattan's Academy Records, is situated right on N 6th street in the heart of hipster Mecca, Williamsburg. Academy is probably the neighborhood's best place to find used records. They buy lots of records too, but why would you want to sell your record collection to them? Only recently have they started to stock new reissues and new bands, but their selection of used albums is solid. As such, it's an excellent place to spend a Saturday afternoon browsing. They boast over 25,000 LPs on display at any given time and pride themselves on having every genre covered, but their country music section leaves much to be desired, so don't come here to get Faron Young's Hello Walls. Still they've got a decent cache of jazz and tons of rock and roll.
The clerks here are your typical record store guys that look bored and disaffected, but they are sure to be rocking something you've never heard before and sounds great. The shoppers are true collectors digging for gems in their dynamic inventory. It's also a hub for local bands' show posters in an age where band posters are a dying breed. So that's cool. And it's a good spot to find local bands' new records. This is one store that most Brooklyn bands make sure to get their record in.
In an area with several quality record shops in easy reach, Academy stands out as a place that never fails to please the music fan looking to peruse and explore. It's the kind of store you don't just browse, but saunter through.
