With the influx of psychedelic bands tuning in, and turning on in recent years, it's only fair that we weigh in with some choice vinyl recommendations. Although we love the psych-inspired current crop like The Fresh Fresh and Onlys, Wooden Shjips and Dead Meddow, it's the purpose of this post to get some of our readers tuned into some the more obscure stuff. We just added two such compilations to our store, and I must say they are some of the coolest psych comps since Nuggets.
Psych Funk 101is a rad exploration into the world of psychedelic funk tunes from around the world. The grooves on this record span the globe from Italy, Iran, Turkey, and South Korea to name a few, each region carving out a unique take on this explorative type of music. Sure, everyone knows what was going on in the 60's and 70's in the US and UK, but to see how this music effected the rest of the world is truly remarkable. Psych Funk incorporates quirky rhythmic patters, and genre clashing at it's best. This record was one of the true gems that we picked up here at Daily Vinyl, and is definitely worth a few spins.
The other request we have for you today is the record Forge Your Own Chains. This compilation, which gets it's title from the D.R. Hooker song of the same name, delves into heavy psych ballads. This record again spans the globe to blend folk, jazz, funk, gospel, and guitar driven rock, into a tightly compiled record of 15 spacey songs. Best accompanied by your favorite mind expanding substance, these deep groves will be any music obscurists acid trip come true! The 2-LP set has gotten quite a few plays over the past week here at DV, and we know when we are flipping a record over more than 20 times it's gotta be good.
