RIP Mark LinkousOriginally posted on March 8, 2010

It was confirmed last night via Rolling Stone that Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous committed suicide on March 6, 2010. His family released the following statement:

'It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There's a heaven and there's a star for you.'

Linkous' music career began when he moved to New York in the 1980's and founded the band The Dancing Hoods. The band would release a couple of records receiving critical praise and were even favorites of The Replacements. Although The Dancing Hoods were cool, it would not be until he started Sparklehorse, and released the debut album Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot that Linkous' name would really be put on the musical map. He would continue releasing music as Sparklehorse until his death, collaborating with such artists as Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, John Parish, Nina Persson, Vic Chesnutt, and Dave Fridmann along the way.

Linkous just recently completed a record with producer Danger Mouse and director David Lynch called Dark Night of the Soul. It was reported that he was putting the finishing touches on the new Sparklehorse record at the time of his death.

A great artist, and overall cool guy who will be missed. The ASFP is a great organization working to prevent future suicides.
