Band Review: Love

Band Review: Love: "

Love band photoFronted by singer, songwriter and guitarist Arthur Lee and second songwriter, guitarist Bryan MacLean, Love was one of the quintessential bands of the 1960's counter-movement. Love is considered one of the most diverse American pop bands of their era, using elements of rock and roll, garage rock, folk and psychedelia to created a truly unique sound.

They signed to the Elektra Records in the mid-60's and scored their first minor hit single in 1966 with their version of Burt Bacharach's 'My Little Red Book'. Their debut LP, simply titled Love, was released in May 1966, and included stand out tracks 'Signed D.C.' and 'Softly To Me.' The album sold moderately well and reached #57 on the album charts.

In August, 1966, the single '7 and 7 Is' became their highest-charting recording, reaching #33. Their 1967 record Forever Changes is still widely considered their best album to date, charting at #24 on the UK charts. Love would continue to have their most success in the UK. They continued successfully throughout the 60's until the band succumbed to addiction and other issues, leaving Lee as the primary member until their final release, Real to Reel, in 1974.
